Food, water and medical supplies fill three cargo planes.
Two days after a massive explosion in Beirut’s port left at least 157 dead, some 5,000 injured, and over 300,000 homeless, the United States sent three cargo planes to Lebanon filled with food, water, and medical supplies, according to Central Command. The aircraft departed from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
General Frank McKenzie, the commander of CENTCOM, said three C-17s of relief supplies are part of the American military’s willingness to continue to work with the Lebanese Armed Forces “to help provide aid and assistance to meet the needs of the Lebanese people during this terrible tragedy.”
French President Emanuel Macron visited the blast site, offering to organize European, American, and Middle Eastern nations and other donors in raising money for food, medicine, housing, and other urgent aid. He promised a “clear and transparent governance” so that the aid goes directly to the populations and aid groups. He promised angry Lebanese crowds that aid to help would not go to “corrupt hands,” and he urged the political authorities to carry out reforms or risk plunging Lebanon deeper into crisis.
